BRAZILIAN FIRE

Synopsis

Opposites attract or so the cliché goes, though two people from different cultures with conflicting ideas need to embrace their differences, join together to thwart blackmail and solve the mysterious disease that’s killing range cattle, before they can build a solid foundation for love.

Adrian Braisos, 32, wealthy fazendaro and retired Matador inherited the largest cattle operation in Brazil’s state of Mato Grosso and transformed it into a highly profitable business until he discovers carcasses of dead cattle. He assumes they are prey for a hungry onca (Jaguar) which presents a dilemma: killing Brazil’s largest predator is against the law. He has to make a choice: break the law to protect his investment or do nothing only to lose everything.

Claire Connely, 24, former microbiologist and ecology devote snuck out of the New York apartment she shares with her overbearing father to travel to Brazil with the ecology group she belongs to. Underestimating funds for the trip she runs out of money. Refusing help from the group or returning home she comes across an advertisement for a cook on Fazenda Braisos.

Her arrival on the ranch is greeted with Adrian’s disapproval. Not about to leave without a meeting she convinces Adrian to allow the interview.

When Adrian’s mother decides to give the inexperienced Americana a chance Adrian doesn’t expect much from a gringo. Crossing paths with her prompts facetious teasing, what begins as an amusing game takes an unexpected turn. Despite his obligation to marry a wealthy fazendaro’s daughter he develops an interest in Claire.

Claire snubs his cocky manner. But when, in drunken fun, he lifts her up onto the saddle and kisses her she slaps his face, accusing him of being a rogue and twists free. Despite Adrian’s rakish behavior she can’t shake the heated sensation of his lips on hers.

Tolerance doesn’t come easy for Claire when she finds out about Adrian’s plan to hunt the onca, but when a dry storm ignites ranch buildings they unite to battle a common cause. Despite efforts to extinguish the fires Adrian takes another financial hit, losing ranch buildings and cattle.

Beginning to understand Arian’s financial predicament, Claire’s heart softens. But sympathy is short lived when she goes for supplies and on the return trip is abducted.

When she fails to return Adrian realizes how much he cares for her and searches until he finds her the next day unharmed. Expecting gratitude for her rescue he’s insulted when she accuses him of planning the kidnapping. Angry he reprimands her for false accusations and criticizes her credulity.

Ashamed she expects him to hate her, but he doesn’t. He invites her to accompany him on a business trip to Rio. They start to appreciate each other, but leave confused.

Upon return to the ranch Adrian decides to fly to Mexico City to attend the Corrida (Bullfight). When Claire insists on going along he concedes, hoping she’ll come to understand the rite, but so offended by it she wants to return to the States. With no legitimate reason to detain her he agrees to let her go.

The day of her departure Adrian is preparing to leave on a fishing trip and refuses to drive her to the airport his foreman will take her. Hurt by his indifferent attitude it seems all they shared must mean nothing. After driving a short distance Adrian has second thoughts and returns to invite her to accompany him into the rainforest. Unable to resist she accepts.

Surrounded by the wild beauty of the jungle they experience the bliss of intimacy, but unfortunately all good things must come to an end and they leave paradise.

On the return drive they come across a group of sick cattle some dead others dying. This obviously isn’t the result of a hungry onca. Adrian’s first priority is to put the cows out of their misery and he ignores Claire’s protest that he’ll destroy evidence that could reveal clues to the disease.

Upon arrival at the house Adrian’s met by an angry mob of fazendaros accusing him of betrayal, dismissing the accusations, he rounds up a group of men to destroy the sick cattle.

Claire’s desperate pleas to allow her to take blood samples falls on deaf ears so she takes matters into her own hands. This act of insubordination infuriates Adrian, but unable to convince her to return to the house he succumbs to her demand.

When Claire is again obligated to go for supplies she is accompanied by armed guards. At the store she overhears Adrian’s adversary (Joao Mendes) talking about his plot against Adrian. Later she relates the information to Adrian and worries that his rage will ignite a range war. But her worst fears are yet to transpire…

After Adrian confronts his archenemy, he reveals that Joao is blackmailing him to return to the bull ring to save the ranch. Claire angered by his determination to face the bulls, after a 7 year absence, fears for his safety. Refusing to accompany him she remains on the ranch to discover the mystery disease that’s attacking the cattle. Eager to relate her findings she secures a flight to Mexico City.

On arrival she’s unable to connect with Adrian and must sit through a terrifying Corrida which results in Adrian’s triumphant return to the ring.

Once reunited they immediately fly back to Brazil. On the ground, facing impending danger with an unknown outcome, they proclaim their love. Adrian orders her to stay at the house for safety, but his fight becomes her fight and under the cover of darkness she stows away in his jeep. When Adrian is confronted by Joao on the cerrado (range) Claire saves his life, but to avoid prosecution must flee Brazil.

Back in New York Claire makes peace with her father who is only too grateful for her safe return. A month later she discovers she’s pregnant which only compounds her grief of missing her man of the Mato, knowing he’ll never have the chance to see his offspring.

Jilted by his betrothed, Adrian wrestles with a past which he must come to terms with before he can take the next step.

Nearly a year goes by when Adrian suddenly appears at Claire’s door offering to relinquish his life on the cerrado to prove his love. His willingness to give up everything melts Claire’s heart and she accepts his love and returns to Brazil to become his wife.
